摘要

Ice accretion may cause malfunction or serious performance degradation in outdoor facilities and structures, such as aircraft, ship, locks and dams, offshore platforms, solar panels, wind turbines, power transmission towers and lines, and sports facilities, leading to huge economic loss or even loss of human lives. Icephobic materials, typically applied in the form of coatings, have received growing attention in the last decade. In this presentation, I willreview three main aspects of icephobic coatings, viz., water wettability, ice delays, and ice adhesion from both theoretical and application perspectives. Low water wetting, either in the static and/or dynamic state is preferred for timely removal of water before icing occurs. Ice nucleation theories are important to understand how surface properties affect the ice nucleation behavior, which in turn could be used to engineer surfaces withsignificant icing delays. When ice formation becomes inevitable, icephobic coatings should possess a low ice adhesion strength, typically no more than 0.1 MPa, for easyremoval of the ice. This talk will also cover icephobic performance evaluation in lab scale. Lastly, some outstanding issues and challenges faced by the research community will be discussed.

 

个人简历 

Chen Zhong obtained his PhD in 1997 at the University of Reading, U.K. After completing the study, he joined the newly established Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, a national research institute funded by Singapore government. In March 2000, he moved to Nanyang Technological University (NTU) as an Assistant Professor, and has since been promoted to Associate Professor and Professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering. Prof. Chen’s research interests include 1) Surface Engineering, Thin Films & Nanostructured Materials, and 2) Mechanical Behaviour of Materials. He is an author of over 200 peer-reviewed journal papers, 5 book chapters and 5 granted patents. According to Web of Science Core Collection, his papers have received over 7000 citations with h-index of 43. Since joining NTU, Prof. Chen has graduated 28 PhD and 4 MEng students. Prof. Chen has served as an editor / editorial board member for 8 academic journals. He has also served as a reviewer for more than 70 academic journals and a number of research funding agencies including the European Research Council.
