Abstract:

Nowadays, there are quite number of problems in foreign literature studies to be addressed and solved, which will directly affect the quality of foreign literature study. Based on the years of experience of English literature study and teaching, it is argued that there are six pressing problems in foreign literature study: lack of understanding in five aspects and low quality in one aspect.

Lack of understanding in five aspects: 1) values of foreign literature study; 2) two perspectives; 3) historic and contemporary awareness; 4) the relationship between litrary criticism and context; 5) essence of post-modern writers and their works

Introduction to the lecturer:

Professor Guo Qiqing graduated from English Department of Peking University in 1977, and taught there. From 1982 to 1983, he studied Comparative Study in Chinese and Western Literature in the Chinese University of Hongkong. Professor Guo studied American Literature after WWII in Cornell University from 1987 to 1989.

Professor Guo was the Dean of English Department of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Director of library, Executive director of World Language and Culture Study Center. Now he is the education supervisor of post-graduate candidates of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Deputy Director of World Asian Study Center and editor of Asia Research Network. He is also a professor of English Academy and supervisor of PhD candidates.

His publications mainly include Selection of Classical American Literature, A Handbook of Writing, A Basic Course in Writing, etc. Professor Guo published more than 40 articles and received many national and provincial awards and awards presented by Ministry of Education.
